You have the right to:

 

bullet Select which provider agency and personal assistant you will work with
bullet Direct how work will be done in your home
bullet Decide which tasks you need assistance to complete
bullet Be listened to when conveying your wants and needs
bullet Be treated like and adult, with dignity and respect
bullet Be assured that all rules of confidentiality will apply to you by both your personal assistant and all other staff within your provider agency
bullet Have security for your home and all personal possessions, including food, medications and financial assets
bullet Live without fear or experience of physical1 emotional2 or sexual abuse3 as well as neglect4 exploitation5 or extortion6
bullet Fire and/or replace your personal assistant and/or provider agency if your needs are not being met

 

 

  1. Physical abuse is defined as contact or actions that result in injury or pain, such as hitting, pinching, yanking, shoving, pulling hair, etc.

  2. Emotional abuse is defined as threats, ridicule, isolation, intimidation, harassment.

  3. Sexual abuse is defined as any unwanted sexual activity, without regard to contact or injury; any sexual activity with a person whose capacity to consent or resist is limited.

  4. Neglect is defined as withholding or not assuring provision of basic necessary care, such as food, water, medical or other support services, shelter, safety, reasonable personal and home cleanliness, or any other necessary care if caused by the caregiver.

  5. Exploitation is defined as the misuse of someone's money, services, property, or the use of a power of attorney or guardianship for one's own purposes.

  6. Extortion is defined as taking something of value from a person by force, intimidation, or abuse of legal or official authority.
